THE DORDOGNE

The Dordogne region of south west France is still one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Europe. It enjoys a warm climate so, in summer, the rolling countryside is dotted with vineyards and sunflowers.

The pretty village of Vanxains with its traditional bar/tabac and beautiful Romanesque church nestles in the valley below and is only a short drive, cycle ride or pleasant walk away. The bustling town of Riberac is just 4 miles away. It has a range of shops, hypermarkets, restaurants and other facilities including a cinema, canoe and bike hire. The famous Friday market is a must for visitors and is as much a social occasion as a shopping opportunity.

It is just 7 miles to Aubeterre – a very old and beautiful village. Both here and at the nearby bastide town of St Aulaye there are lovely river beaches. There is also a nine hole golf course located at nearby Longeveau.

Only 8 miles away, Le Grand Etang de Jemaye has a superb lakeside beach with swimming, water-sports, forest walks, bar/restaurant and picnic areas.

There are many other interesting and historic places to explore. Brantome, Bourdeilles, Bergerac, Perigueux and St Emilion are all less than an hour’s drive and are brilliant for sightseeing (and wine tasting!).

Slightly further afield, the 17th century Chateau de Hautefort, the world famous cave paintings at Lascaux, the magnificent city of Bordeaux, the stylish seaside resort of Royan, the vast dunes of the Atlantic coast, Cognac and its distilleries and the historic port of La Rochelle are all easily accessible.
